Background:
Keratins are a large family of proteins that form the intermediate filament cytoskeleton of epithelial cells , which are classified into two major sequence types. Type I keratins are a group of acidic intermediate filament proteins , including K9-K23 , and the hair keratins Ha1-Ha8. Type II keratins are the basic or neutral courterparts to the acidic type I keratins , including K1-K8 , and the hair keratins , Hb1-Hb6. This antibody can react with Cytokeratin 5 and Cytokeratin 6.

Function:
Function: Required for the formation of keratin intermediate filaments in the basal epidermis and maintenance of the skin barrier in response to mechanical stress (By similarity) . Regulates the recruitment of Langerhans cells to the epidermis , potentially by modulation of the abundance of macrophage chemotactic cytokines , macrophage inflammatory cytokines and CTNND1 localization in keratinocytes (By similarity) . Epidermis-specific type I keratin involved in wound healing. Involved in the activation of follicular keratinocytes after wounding , while it does not play a major role in keratinocyte proliferation or migration. Participates in the regulation of epithelial migration by inhibiting the activity of SRC during wound repair.
